Former Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an illustrious career that spanned nearly 15 years with the Nigerian national team.
In a heartfelt message addressed to Nigerians and the Super Eagles family, Musa revealed that the decision came after deep reflection, marking the close of a journey that began from his youth and grew into one of the most significant careers in Nigerian football history.
Musa recalled his early days with the national setup, noting that he was called up simultaneously to the U-20, U-23 and Super Eagles teams at a young age. Despite the demands and constant travel, he said representing Nigeria was never something he questioned, stressing that whenever the country called, he answered without hesitation.
The former Leicester City forward described Nigeria as “always home,” even though football took him across different parts of the world. He leaves the national team as Nigeria’s most capped player, having featured in 111 international matches, a milestone he described as a great honour and responsibility.
Among the standout moments of his international career, Musa highlighted Nigeria’s triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, describing that squad as a true reflection of what it meant to play for the country. He also reflected fondly on his performances at the FIFA World Cup, where he scored against Argentina and Iceland, becoming Nigeria’s highest goalscorer in World Cup history with four goals.
Musa further described captaining the Super Eagles as a defining chapter of his career, saying the armband taught him responsibility, patience and the importance of putting the team first. He noted that even during periods of criticism and difficulty, his commitment to Nigeria never wavered.
“Football gave me a career, but Nigeria gave me meaning,” Musa stated, as he expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, backroom staff, administrators and fans at home and abroad for their unwavering support over the years.
As he steps away from international football, Musa said he does so with peace and gratitude, confident that he gave his best and that the Super Eagles will continue to move forward.
He concluded his message with a powerful reminder of his enduring bond with the national team: “Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”
