CAF C & B LICENSE: NIGERIAN COACHES UNDER SCRUTINY OVER ALLEGE WIDESPREAD IRREGULARITIES IN CAF COURSES
By Chimaobi J Nzoromobi
A fresh wave of concern has emerged within the Nigerian football community following allegations that many local coaches may be holding CAF coaching certificates they did not fully qualify for. A reliable Nigerian football insider revealed that for several years, participants in the CAF C and CAF B coaching courses in Nigeria reportedly obtained certificates without completing the required modules or meeting the minimum attendance benchmarks.
According to the insider, no candidate in Nigeria reportedly failed the CAF C or B courses for many years, raising red flags at the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“Do you know that in previous years, no one ever failed the CAF C and B coaching courses in Nigeria? Many attended the courses and got a certificate of attendance, but they did not actually complete the modules required or meet the needed attendance levels to pass the exam. CAF frowned on how everyone used to pass the course in Nigeria, year after year, because that is impossible,” the insider revealed.
These revelations come at a time when African football’s governing body is tightening its coaching standards across the continent to enhance the quality of technical development and ensure that individuals holding coaching badges are truly competent.
CAF Coaching License Modules: What Coaches Are Required to Complete
CAF’s coaching education pathway includes several levels: CAF D (grassroots), CAF C, CAF B, CAF A, and the elite CAF Pro License. Each course has strict requirements covering theory, practical sessions, assessments, and continuous evaluation.
1. CAF C License – Grassroots / Youth Development Level
This is designed for coaches working with young players or lower-division teams.
Typical modules include:
- Coaching methodology basics
- Warm-up techniques, fundamentals of fitness
- Technical skills development
- Small-sided games
- Introduction to sports science
- Player welfare and child protection
- Minimum training hours and mandatory practical assessments
CAF requires candidates to attend all modules, complete assignments, and pass both written and practical exams.
2. CAF B License – Intermediate / Club-Level Coaching
This level targets coaches working in national leagues, academies, or semi-professional setups.
Modules generally include:
- Advanced coaching methods and tactical systems
- Team periodisation and season planning
- Match analysis and video review
- Sports psychology and communication
- Strength and conditioning principles
- Leadership and team management
- A compulsory minimum number of coaching practice hours
- End-of-course examination (theory + practical)
CAF emphasizes strict attendance and continuous assessment, and failure to meet standards should result in a non-pass.
CAF's Recent Reforms
CAF in recent years has:
- Increased monitoring of member associations conducting coaching courses
- Mandated stricter attendance tracking
- Deployed CAF-appointed instructors to supervise evaluations
- Introduced digital registration and certification to curb irregularities
These reforms aim to eliminate inconsistencies such as those allegedly reported in Nigeria.
Growing Concern Among Stakeholders
The allegations suggest that Nigeria may have several coaches currently working with clubs, academies, and even league sides with certificates obtained through a flawed system. If verified, the issue could have serious implications for coach development, club performance, and youth training.
Stakeholders are now calling on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and its Coaching Education Department to:
- Review previously issued certificates
- Standardise coaching courses going forward
- Enforce CAF’s updated curriculum and supervision procedures
With CAF already tightening its licensing framework, Nigeria may soon be required to justify past certifications or mandate re-training for coaches whose qualifications are questionable.
