Rooney at rock bottom as his confidence continues to wane

Rooney had to watch the first half from the substitutes' bench before replacing Memphis Depay at the break

Wayne Rooney heads into one of the most important six-month spells of his career with his self-belief as low as anyone at Old Trafford has ever seen it.

The decision by Louis van Gaal to drop the Manchester United skipper at Stoke on Saturday seemed peculiar. Subsequently, the United manager admitted that the move hadn’t worked and Rooney will be restored to the starting line-up against Chelsea.
For Rooney, however, these are difficult times. Hamstrung by his manager’s tactical ideas but obliged to offer almost unwavering support after being made United captain, the 30-year-old has been dragged down to a level of under-performance never seen before.
