Mourinho pours scorn on Chelsea's Champions League win
Chelsea's miraculous Champions League triumph in 2012 was "not a consequence of great work", according to Jose Mourinho.
Tuesday's Group G clash in Europe's elite club competition with Schalke will bring about a reunion with Roberto Di Matteo, the caretaker manager who led the Blues to an FA Cup win and glory against the odds over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena to deliver the trophy owner Roman Abramovich prizes most for the first time in the club's history.
Chelsea's Champions League run came against the backdrop of a disappointing Premier League season that saw them finish sixth, and Mourinho believes their trophy-winning exploits under Di Matteo provide a classic example of the volatile nature of the competition.
“The Champions League, many, many times I say, is not a consequence of a great work,” the Portuguese told reporters. “Sometimes it is not. You can win the Champions League in the worst season. You can finish fifth and win the Champions League. Right. Liverpool did, and Chelsea, too.
"A knockout competition is something that always has a big percentage of unpredictability.”
