Wenger hints at move for defender & defensive midfielder

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits that he is open to bringing in both a defensive midfielder and defensive cover before the transfer window closes, though the club will not panic into making new signings.

The Gunners have had a €25 million bid for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho rejected but are close to securing Greece international defender Kostas Manolas after the Olympiakos man underwent a medical.

When asked about the possibility of signing a defensive midfielder, Wenger told the press: "We are not against that, no.

"If it's a long-term injury [for Mikel Arteta] that puts us in a position where we have to be creative."
