USA 0-1 Germany: Thomas Muller nets winner

Image
In the end there was no cosy draw as many had feared there would be. Instead there was merely confirmation that few football nations go about their business with the serenity that Germany always seem to possess at these tournaments. Here in rain-soaked Recife, the Americans never really lived up to their billing. They are through but only because Ghana didn’t manage to close the gap on them by beating Portugal. Germany were too good for them. Too powerful and too disciplined, Joachim Low’s team never really allowed his friend Jurgen Klinsmann to impose his side on the game. It wasn’t exciting and it wasn’t particularly dynamic but Germany deserved their win and the goal that secured victory was a good one, too. Its scorer Thomas Muller know has four in his World Cup to go with the five he contributed to the German cause in South Africa four years ago.

Match Report: Nigeria 1-0 Bosnia Herzegovina

Peter Odemwingie scored the only goal to give Nigeria a victory that means World Cup debutants Bosnia-Herzegovina will not progress from Group F. The Stoke forward struck in the first half to give Nigeria their first win at a World Cup finals since 1998. The goal came just seven minutes after Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko had a goal incorrectly disallowed for offside. Nigeria will reach the knockout stages if they get a point against Argentina, or if Iran fail to beat Bosnia. Odemwingie's decisive strike came just a month after he returned to the Nigeria squad following a two-year absence caused by a dispute with coach Stephen Keshi. Knowing they needed a win to stay in their first World Cup finals, Bosnia attacked from the start but were vulnerable in defence, with Odemwingie, John Mikel Obi and Michael Babatunde all squandering early chances for Nigeria. Bosnia briefly thought they had taken the lead when Dzeko latched onto a pass from Miralem Pjanic, but the Man...
