Manchester United 4-1 Aston Villa
A marginally flattering victory over Villa had aided his cause. Indeed, another home defeat might have damaged him beyond repair. But it was his decision to face his public, to assert his authority, to demand the support he feels he deserves that carried such significance.
He made his entrance a couple of minutes before his team, consciously seeking the spotlight. The Stretford End greeted him with a standing ovation to indicate where their loyalties lay.
Another eruption of allegiance greeted him at half time, and third, still more thunderous, rewarded him at the close. Throughout the match, he made repeated visits to the edge of the technical area; waving arms, issuing orders, reminding a congregation 75, 368 strong just who is in charge of this parish.
'I just wanted everyone to know that I’m the manager of this club and you know where I stand', he explained. 'It was a show of support for the club and the team.'
